The Green

Shhhh.....Can you keep a secret?
The Green is the best kept secret on Carter's Creek as it is tucked away in Dead & Bones Cove around the point from the Tide's Lodge. It was developed in the early to mid 1970's in association with The Tide's Inn.  The homes were originally sold as potential rental units for guests of the Inn who wished to have extended stays in the area.  Savvy buyers recognized the value and uniqueness of these homes and many were purchased as year around residences.

The development sits on 8.4 acres and contains 12 buildings with 2 homes in each building. Their architectural style and colors were influenced by the construction in Colonial Williamsburg. The homes are one or two storied, and have cedar shake roofs with brick or narrow clapboard siding.  All the units have water views and a deeded boat slip.

Today, roughly half the homes are full time residences while the remaining units are used on weekends and holidays.  One of the two dependencies on the property provides limited space for the storage of tools, bicycles and the like.  There is an active homeowners association which is overseen by a board of directors.

Why is The Green So Special?

This charming little enclave is conveniently located with easy access to the towns of Weems, Kilmarnock and Irvington. Most conveniences (hospital, grocery store, pharmacies, hardware store, churches, restaurants etc) are easily found within a four mile radius.  The neighborhood is surrounded by water and adjoins the expansive grounds that once were the Tartan Golf Course.  Traffic in the area remains light and area roads are suitable for bike travel.

While the homes are built in close proximity, neighbors value each other and respect the need for privacy.  (There is an unwritten code that an open front door signals a visitor is welcome.)

It is almost like stepping back in time, in that all neighbors know each other and are always willing to lend a helping hand.  Most residents are retired or work part time, and everyone shares a love of the water and boating.

Neighbors build a floating dock together. The frame is constructed,
the floats secured and the decking is installed.

Things we love about living in The Green:

* the camaraderie
* sharing cocktails with friends on the dock while watching the sunset
* invitations to dinner when a spouse is out of town
* shared ownership of a boat (or two) to spread the maintenance cost and use
* instant kayaking buddies
* spontaneous oyster roasts & fish sautés (not fries)
* the incredible diversity and talents of the residents
* no one cares what you did before you came here
* availability of a helping hand
* close proximity to the Tide's Inn and the Rappahannock River Yacht Club
* diversity of wildlife
* closeness of the water
* fishing with friends and sharing a pot luck dinner
* evening Duffy cruises
* genuinely good neighbors

It floats!
